ABOUT ME

My name is Candy and I am a DONA (Doulas of North America) trained postpartum doula. My husband and I are the parents of 4 married sons and grandparents of 3. I grew up in Robbinsdale; lived my early married years in Richfield and currently live in Brooklyn Park. I have loved babies all my life and I have been the "grandma" to friend's children as well as to my own. I love to read, walk, sew and bake. My specialty is homemade chocolate chip cookies which I will share with you if your diet allows. In addition, I am:
  • DONA certified as a Postpartum Doula
  • Certified in infant and adult CPR
  • Experienced with twins, premature infants, infants with Apnea monitors, and mothers with Postpartum Depression
  • An active member of the Childbirth Collective
  • Certified Lactation Counselor

My Philosophy

I believe that your first weeks at home with your infant should be relaxed and calm. I recommend that for the first week new Mom's should get lots of rest and stay reclined and stress free while others take care of her. Her only concern should be getting to know and learning to love her new baby. How an infant is fed, diapered, bathed or what book you read on childrearing doesn't really matter as long as he or she has parents that love them.

I believe that what new families need most is nurturing and gentle support. I am available to support the new mother on an "as needed" basis so that she can get the rest she needs to be able to nurture and care for her baby. While I focus on the mother's needs, my goal is to help both parents develop confidence in their own style of parenting skills, while I demonstrate techniques in newborn care and feeding. There are many correct ways to care for babies and I do not enforce my preferences or insist that you follow a specific school of thought with respect to your baby's care. I trust you to make the best decisions for your baby and I will help you to get any information you need to help you make wise choices. Bringing a new baby home is very sensitive time for families and it is my goal to be helpful in a quiet, pleasant, appropriate and unobtrusive way. I am respectful of the traditions, culture and values of my clients.

I am not a medical professional and if you have medical concerns, I will refer you to the appropriate professional. I have a list of references of professional resources if needed.

The person you choose as your postpartum doula will be an important part of your life for a short, but very important time; therefore, you will want to choose someone with whom you feel very comfortable. You will not only want to consider skills, but personality and style. If I am not the person to fit your requirements, I may be able to help you locate someone who is.
